happy mozday
I have been a fan of Morrissey and The Smiths since something like 1983. I don't remember the exact year because most of that time of my life is a blur of actual memory, memory fed by pictures, and memory as retold and refashioned by and with my friends. I am pretty sure that the first song that I heard was Suffer Little Children. It hooked me.Recently, a friend asked what it was that made me become a Morrissey freak. While I am a big fan, I didn't realize how freakish I was. It's kind of funny to me to think about my own fanatic behavior; I think it is that way with most of our fanishness, be it a sports team, a musician, or weather phenomenon (those storm chasers are crazy). The basis of fandom is that you think everyone should be or is just as impressed by your idol as you are. There are Morrissey songs that I will skip in a shuffle just as there are games that Bears fans would rather not talk about. The difference for me as a fan is that I have an ethereal connection with a man I have never met that tricks my brain into thinking that I know where he was coming from when he recorded a certain song. This gives me an allowance for those lesser quality tracks and keeps my overall picture of the artist one of tremendous esteem.
So maybe I am a freak, but I think we all are. And that is essentiallly what it is that I like about Morrissey. His freakishness is really his normalness. He is happy, sad, ironic, lonely, longing, fulfilled, insecure and confident. The difference is he sings about it and then I don't have to... but I do.
Happy birthday Morrissey.
