it's not fun, don't do it

Their national, big-name press is full of references to twin status and lesbian rock. They can’t decide whether to call them new and adorable or edgy pop goddesses. Through it all, Tegan & Sara maintain sanity just by being who they are whether on stage, riding a tour bus, or working through new material in the studio.

I am not usually a fan of music DVDs. They tend to be bloated with unnecessary extra or bare collections of video I could have watched on YouTube. It’s Not Fun Don’t Do It! is neither. I like it. Released as a tour documentary, the DVD gives us a picture of what it was like to create So Jealous, one of the most well received records of 2004, and takes us on tour with Tegan and Sara Quinn in support of the album.

We got a sneak peak at the concert footage in a bonus disc that came with So Jealous, but seeing the full show is a great treat especially after they weren’t able to make it to the one show (ACL Festival) I was scheduled to see last year. The included videos, as great as they are, seem a side project in this collection of tour and recording happenings. T&S also take us on a journey into their past in a groovy photo show where they flip through pictures and narrate each one.

The Vancouver/Montreal sisters are currently working on a new album (their fourth) set for release in 2007. If you aren’t real familiar with Tegan & Sara, this DVD might be a great introduction. Likewise, the exposure of the recording process and the puppet show are enough to entertain even a casual fan. I have to recommend you go out and get this one.
